A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a gold demi-Philippine sun in front of and partially below a pair of gold wings as depicted on the caduceus; below the sun two white horizontal wavy bars on a green field surmounted in base by a scarlet Greek cross, all above a semicircular maroon scroll, the ends turning upward and outward and terminating behind the sun, bearing the inscription "STRIVING TO SERVE" in gold letters.
The scarlet cross, a symbol of aid and assistance, on the green background represents the 73d Field Hospital. Green was also the color of the medieval academic gowns for Medicine. The wings refer to the Army Medical Department insignia of branch. The wavy bars allude to the Pacific where the unit participated in the Leyte Campaign, World War II. The sun symbolizes the unit's Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 20 July 1971.
